Adani Green Energy surpasses 12,000 MW renewable energy capacity, setting record

Adani Green Energy, the renewable energy arm of the Adani Group, announced on Friday that it has crossed a significant milestone, surpassing 12,000 megawatts (MW) of operational capacity. This achievement makes Adani Green Energy the first and only renewable energy company in India to reach such a landmark.

The company’s portfolio now stands at 12,258.1 MW, including 8,347.5 MW from solar power, 1,651 MW from wind, and 2,259.6 MW from wind-solar hybrid capacity. Adani Green Energy highlighted that this milestone reinforces its commitment to delivering 50,000 MW of clean, affordable, and reliable energy by 2030.

This operational capacity is enough to power over 6.2 million homes and prevent around 22.64 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. Additionally, the company is working on creating the world’s largest renewable energy plant in Khavda, Gujarat, which will have a total capacity of 30,000 MW. The project is located on barren land in Kutch, Gujarat, spanning 538 square kilometers. Upon completion, it will be the largest power plant globally, regardless of the energy source. So far, Adani Green Energy has operationalized 2,824.1 MW of renewable energy at Khavda.

“The rapid development at Khavda highlights AGEL’s commitment to India’s goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030,” the company said in its statement. “Work continues at an accelerated pace, with AGEL drawing on the project execution capabilities of Adani Infra, the manufacturing expertise of Adani New Industries Limited, the operational excellence of Adani Infrastructure Management Services Ltd., and the robust supply chain provided by our strategic partners.”

Adani Green Energy develops, owns, and operates large-scale, grid-connected renewable energy plants, including solar, wind, hybrid, and hydro pumped storage. The company currently has India’s largest operational renewable energy portfolio of 12.2 GW, spread across 12 states. It aims to achieve 50 GW by 2030 in line with India’s decarbonization goals.

At the COP26 summit in 2021, India made an ambitious commitment under the “Panchamrit” pledge, which includes reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity, generating half of its energy from renewables, reducing emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030, cutting the emissions intensity of GDP by 45%, and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. The global momentum for green energy and climate action continues to grow, aligning with India’s focus on clean energy for climate mitigation.
