Latvia’s Bauskas municipality seeks public input on proposed biogas plant

Officials in the Latvian municipality of Bauskas have opened a public consultation on a proposed biogas plant, Kekava Bioenergy, which aims to improve poultry farming operations at Kekava Foods, reports Bioenergy Insight.

The planned facility would convert poultry manure into biogas and biomethane, eliminating the need for open manure storage. This change is expected to reduce odours and lower the risk of environmental pollution.

Instead of being stored in the open, manure would be processed in sealed systems designed to break it down without exposure to air. The plant would use fermentation tanks with modern sensors and airtight systems to ensure safety and prevent emissions.

All equipment, including the pipes used to transport raw materials and gas, would be tightly sealed to stop leaks and odours. To further reduce emissions, 95% of the pipelines would be placed underground.

Residents have until February 24 to share their views on the project before a final decision is made.
