Bio-manufacturing will shape the future of global economy: Union Minister Jitendra Singh

Union Minister Jitendra Singh stated on Saturday that bio-manufacturing is set to transform the global economy, and India is well-positioned to lead this shift due to its rich bio-resources. “India has a chance to spearhead the next major revolution in bio-manufacturing. While the West led the IT revolution, India’s vast and largely untapped bio-resources position it to take the lead in this field,” Singh remarked.

As per news report by The Economic Times, he emphasized that bio-manufacturing could address global challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, waste, and pollution. It has the potential to meet rising demands for food and fuel while creating new employment opportunities.

Singh noted that India currently imports most of its crude oil, but bio-manufacturing, utilizing biomass and carbon dioxide, could enhance the country’s self-reliance in fuel production. Additionally, it could support the dairy industry with non-dairy milk alternatives, promoting sustainability.

Recently, the Union Cabinet approved the ‘BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment, and Employment) Policy for Fostering High Performance Biomanufacturing.’ This policy aims to advance research, technology development, and commercialization by establishing bio-manufacturing and bio-AI hubs and biofoundries. It also seeks to enhance the production of various products, from medicines to materials, and promote advanced biotechnological processes in agriculture and manufacturing.
