Shell confirms it will receive 100MW of electrolysers from ITM Power following FID on green hydrogen plant

Shell has confirmed it will receive 100MW of electrolyser stacks from ITM Power following its recent positive final investment decision (FID) on the Refhyne II project, reported H2 View.

As per media report, ITM’s TRIDENT stacks are set to produce up to 44,000kg of renewable hydrogen daily, contributing to the partial decarbonization of fuel production at the Wesseling refinery within the Shell Rheinland Energy and Chemicals Park in Germany, which currently uses grey hydrogen. Linde Engineering will collaborate with ITM as the EPC integrator, with plans to start operating the electrolyser in 2027.

Dennis Schulz, CEO of ITM Power, stated, “Shell is a leading global energy company, and we are honored they have chosen us for this significant project. The performance of our latest generation electrolyser stacks in the Refhyne I plant was crucial in Shell moving forward with the FID, along with their thorough evaluation of our technology and our ability to execute this large-scale commercial project.”

Shell committed to reserving 100MW of ITM Power’s PEM electrolyser stacks in December 2023, with manufacturing expected between 2025 and 2026.

Shell noted that the Refhyne project was facilitated by policies such as the EU’s binding green hydrogen usage targets and the regulatory framework set by the German Government.
