PLN Indonesia Power announces investment in Biomass production facility in Medan

PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP) has announced its investment in a Solid Biomass Fuel (BBJP) production facility in Medan, developed through its Pangkalan Susu Generation Business Unit (UBP), as reported by Kontan.co.id.

The pilot project for the BBJP Plant is situated at the Terjun landfill in Medan Marelan, Medan City, and is being developed in partnership with the Medan City Government.

The assets of the BBJP Plant pilot project have been officially transferred to the Medan City Government via the Environmental Service.

The BBJP facility processes 16 tonnes of Medan’s city waste each month, which is then supplied to the Pangkalan Susu PLTU as part of the primary energy mix.

The BBJP mixture makes up 3% of the daily fuel used by the Pangkalan Susu PLTU, with a calorific value of 3400 KCal/Kg.

Edwin Nugraha Putra, CEO of PLN Indonesia Power, stated that the company is innovating to expedite the energy transition, including implementing biomass co-firing that utilizes waste as a primary energy source for coal-fired power plants (PLTU).

“By employing co-firing, PLN Indonesia Power can help reduce carbon emissions from the electricity sector, particularly from coal-fired power plants,” he explained.

Nugraha Putra further mentioned that the Pangkalan Susu PLTU plays a significant role in the Northern Sumatra electricity system through a 275 KV transmission system, accounting for 29% of the region’s electricity demand. This power plant serves as the backbone of the electricity supply in Northern Sumatra.

“By utilizing BBJP, PLN Indonesia Power can decrease coal consumption in PLTUs, which are essential for electricity supply, and assist local governments in addressing waste management issues,” he said.
