EWE to supply 500 tonnes of green hydrogen annually to Tesa from 2028

German energy company EWE AG and tape manufacturer Tesa have signed an agreement for the annual supply of 500 tonnes of green hydrogen from EWE’s planned 320-MW hydrogen production facility in Emden, Hydrogen Europe reported.

The facility is scheduled to begin operations by the end of 2027, with hydrogen deliveries to Tesa’s plant in Hamburg expected to start in 2028. The contracted volume will cover the Hamburg facility’s planned annual hydrogen requirement.

Tesa plans to use the green hydrogen to generate steam through two dual-fuel steam boilers designed to operate with hydrogen. The first of the two boilers has already been installed at the plant.

Hydrogen will be transported to Tesa through Germany’s developing hydrogen core network, which is being established to connect production facilities with industrial consumers.

The agreement between EWE and Tesa is a private-sector supply contract, while both companies’ hydrogen-related projects are receiving public support.

EWE’s Emden facility forms part of an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) clean hydrogen project in northwest Germany. The project is supported by the German federal government and the state of Lower Saxony.

Tesa’s plans to transform its Hamburg plant are also receiving public funding as the company prepares to incorporate hydrogen into its industrial operations.
