India’s green hydrogen sector gains momentum with export agreements

India’s green hydrogen sector is beginning to move from government incentives and project announcements towards commercial exports, with Indian companies securing long-term international agreements to supply green ammonia and green methanol, FORTUNE INDIA reported.

Companies including ACME Group, AM Green and Larsen & Toubro’s L&T Energy GreenTech are emerging as key players in the export market, with Japan and Europe among the first major overseas destinations for Indian renewable fuels.

In the latest development, Hyderabad-based AM Green has been selected as the sole winner of the Asian lot in the H2Global auction conducted by HINT.CO GmbH (Hintco). The company has secured a long-term agreement to supply renewable ammonia to Germany.

Under the 10-year agreement, Hintco will purchase ammonia from AM Green for a minimum value of €585 million. It may also purchase additional volumes offered by the company, using proceeds from the resale of green ammonia in the European market.

The ammonia will be produced at AM Green’s Phase 2 project in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The company is converting an existing natural gas-based ammonia and urea complex into a renewable-ammonia production facility using alkaline electrolysis technology.

The first supplies to Germany are expected in 2029. The ammonia will be shipped from Kakinada Seaports, which is located next to the production facility.

“This landmark achievement consolidates AM Green’s position as the supplier of choice for renewable ammonia to Germany and wider Europe, and demonstrates that optimally priced green molecules can be delivered from India at an industrial scale,” said Mahesh Kolli, Group President and JMD, AM Green.

Timo Bollerhey, CEO of Hintco and co-founder of H2Global, said strong bids from project developers showed that renewable-ammonia projects had become more mature since the first auction. He said long-term contracts provide producers with greater certainty to invest while giving European buyers a more reliable supply.

The emerging export pipeline is being led by ACME Group, AM Green and L&T Energy GreenTech. Publicly announced agreements from these companies together cover up to 1.2 million tonnes a year of renewable or green ammonia and 100,000 tonnes a year of green methanol, according to sources.

AM Green secures European offtake

One of the first major binding India-origin green-ammonia agreements in Europe was signed in January 2026, when AM Green Ammonia India entered into a long-term agreement with German energy company Uniper.

Under the agreement, Uniper will purchase up to 500,000 tonnes of renewable ammonia annually from AM Green’s projects in India.

The first shipments could begin as early as 2028 from AM Green’s Kakinada project in Andhra Pradesh, which has an annual capacity of 1 million tonnes and is currently under construction.

The agreement provides AM Green with an anchor customer in Europe as the company expands its renewable-ammonia production capacity.

The agreements indicate a growing shift in India’s green hydrogen sector towards long-term commercial supply contracts, with Indian producers increasingly targeting overseas markets for renewable fuels.
