India’s total installed wind power capacity reached 57,443 MW as on June 30, 2026, while electricity generation from wind energy projects touched 106 billion units during 2025-26, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) informed the Lok Sabha.
The data was shared by Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
Wind capacity addition and power generation have risen steadily over the past three financial years, according to the ministry. The country added 3,253 MW of wind capacity in 2023-24, generating 83 billion units, followed by an addition of 4,151 MW in 2024-25, which also produced 83 billion units. In 2025-26, capacity addition rose sharply to 6,057 MW, taking generation up to 106 billion units.
As per the Global Wind Energy Council’s (GWEC) 2026 report, India ranked fourth globally in wind energy installations till December 31, 2025.
Among states, Gujarat led with an installed wind capacity of 16,086 MW, followed by Tamil Nadu at 12,273 MW, Karnataka at 8,896 MW, Maharashtra at 6,318 MW, Rajasthan at 5,516 MW, and Andhra Pradesh at 4,461 MW. Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala accounted for the remaining share of the country’s wind capacity.
On power generation during 2025-26, Gujarat topped the list with 33,706 million units, followed by Tamil Nadu with 24,200 million units and Karnataka with 18,804 million units. Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan generated 8,610 million units, 8,902 million units and 7,345 million units, respectively.
The ministry attributed the sector’s growth to a series of government initiatives, including the waiver of inter-state transmission system charges for solar and wind power, a Viability Gap Funding scheme for offshore wind projects, and a Renewable Purchase Obligation trajectory extended till 2029-30. The government has also permitted 100 per cent foreign direct investment in the renewable energy sector under the automatic route, besides notifying rules to ensure timely payment to renewable energy generators through letters of credit or advance payment.
