US wood pellet exports rise from year ago despite monthly decline in April

U.S. wood pellet exports totaled 933,792.6 metric tons in April, marking a decline from the previous month but remaining higher than levels recorded a year earlier, according to data released by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service.

Export volumes fell 15 percent compared with March. However, shipments were 10 percent higher than those recorded in April 2025, indicating continued strength in international demand for U.S. wood pellets, Biomass Magazine reported.

The United Kingdom remained the largest overseas market for U.S. wood pellets during the month, importing 762,165.7 metric tons. Japan was the second-largest destination with 94,009 metric tons, followed by Denmark with 60,774.5 metric tons. Overall, U.S. wood pellets were exported to approximately 18 countries in April.

The value of exports reached $182.77 million during the month. While this was lower than the $205.24 million recorded in March, it exceeded the $159.39 million reported in April last year.

For the January-April period, total U.S. wood pellet exports reached 3.61 million metric tons, generating $693.64 million in export revenue. During the same period in 2025, exports totaled 3.25 million metric tons with a value of $630.45 million.

The latest figures show that although monthly shipments eased in April, U.S. wood pellet exports continued to outperform last year’s levels, with both export volumes and values posting gains during the first four months of 2026.
