Vietnam launches nationwide E10 fuel programme to cut emissions and boost biofuel use

Hanoi: Vietnam has officially begun nationwide sales of E10 biofuel gasoline, marking a major transition in the country’s fuel sector as ethanol-blended fuel becomes the new standard for unleaded gasoline.

The rollout, which took effect on June 1, follows a directive issued by the Ministry of Industry and Trade requiring all unleaded gasoline to be upgraded to E10, a fuel blend containing 10 per cent ethanol. E5 RON92 gasoline, which contains five per cent ethanol, will continue to be available until the end of 2030, The Star reported.

The nationwide launch follows pilot programmes conducted across several regions since August 2025. Major fuel distributors, including Vietnam National Petroleum Group and PetroVietnam Oil Corporation, have completed preparations for the transition and begun supplying the new fuel across the country.

According to the ministry, the move forms part of Vietnam’s broader strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, expand the use of renewable energy and lower dependence on conventional fossil fuels.

Officials said the country has adequate ethanol production capacity and import supplies to meet the expected nationwide demand for E10 gasoline.

The introduction of E10 represents a significant step in Vietnam’s efforts to increase the share of biofuels in its transport sector while supporting environmental and energy security objectives.
