Demand for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is rising as more passengers choose environmentally friendly travel options offered by the Lufthansa Group, Airline Routes & Ground Services reported.
The airline group said more than five per cent of its passengers opted for sustainable travel options in 2025, including Green Fares that support the use of SAF. Four years ago, the share of passengers choosing such options was below 0.1 per cent.
According to the company, the volume of sustainable aviation fuel sold through its programmes more than doubled last year. Passenger participation in these initiatives has become a key part of the airline group’s efforts to reduce emissions.
Ahead of the summer travel season in 2026, Lufthansa Group has expanded its range of sustainable travel products. Tour operators can now book a new fare option called “TO Green”, which has been developed to meet the growing demand for environmentally responsible travel, particularly among leisure travellers.
Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Group, said the growing demand shows that passengers are increasingly willing to support measures that help cut emissions from air travel.
He said every passenger contribution increases the use of sustainable aviation fuel within the airline’s network and helps reduce carbon emissions.
Green Fares, introduced in 2023, include a contribution toward reducing future carbon emissions based on the estimated emissions from a passenger’s flight. More than four million passengers have chosen these fares so far.
Since January 2026, the fares have also been made available for group bookings of more than nine passengers on long-haul flights operated by Lufthansa Group airlines in all travel classes.
The airline group has also extended similar initiatives to corporate customers. Companies can purchase larger volumes of SAF through bulk agreements and receive a Scope 3 certificate for carbon savings under the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
According to Lufthansa Group, more than 1,680 companies worldwide invested in sustainable aviation fuel through its programmes in 2025, supporting the wider adoption of cleaner fuel in the aviation sector.
