The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation has begun steps to establish a construction and demolition (C&D) waste processing plant at Pandra and a green waste processing plant at Palasuni. Officials said these two types of waste together account for about 20 to 25 per cent of the city’s daily waste generation, The New Indian Express reported.
According to officials, the civic body has invited expressions of interest from private firms to set up a mechanised C&D waste processing unit with a capacity of five tonnes per day at Pandra.
An official said the plant will process construction debris and combine it with low-value plastic to manufacture products such as bricks, paver blocks, drain slabs, kerb stones and other materials used for non-structural construction and landscaping.
In addition, the corporation plans to establish a biomass briquette manufacturing unit at Palasuni to process green waste. Officials said the facility will focus on converting garden and plant waste into usable fuel.
BMC Additional Commissioner Kailash Chandra Das said the green waste plant will produce biomass briquettes that can be used as an alternative fuel by industries, supporting the city’s efforts to turn waste into a useful resource.
Officials said the projects are aimed at reducing pressure on landfills while promoting recycling and cleaner waste management in the city.
