Centre installs over 27,000 electric vehicle charging stations at petrol pumps across India

India significantly expanded its electric vehicle (EV) charging network in 2025, installing thousands of new charging points at petrol pumps nationwide.

In its year-end statement, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said that 8,932 EV charging stations were established at retail outlets under the government’s FAME-II scheme. In addition, oil marketing companies set up more than 18,500 charging stations using their own funds, taking the total number of charging points across the country to 27,432.

The expansion is expected to encourage greater adoption of electric cars and two-wheelers by improving access to charging facilities. Placing chargers at existing fuel stations allows drivers to easily locate charging points during routine travel.

The ministry also highlighted plans by public sector oil marketing companies to develop 4,000 Energy Stations between 2024–25 and 2028–29 along major highways and other suitable locations. Designed as integrated mobility hubs, these stations will offer petrol and diesel alongside alternative fuels such as biofuels, CNG, LNG where feasible, and EV charging. As of November 1, 2025, a total of 1,064 Energy Stations had been commissioned across the country, the release said.

Beyond passenger vehicles, the government also addressed the needs of freight transport. Under the “APNA GHAR” initiative, more than 500 rest areas for truck drivers were created, contributing to improved road safety and employment generation in rural regions. These measures form part of a broader national strategy to make transport cleaner and more efficient.

Biofuels recorded substantial progress during the year. According to the ministry, ethanol blending in petrol averaged 19.24 per cent in ESY 2024–25, resulting in cumulative foreign exchange savings of over ₹1.55 lakh crore and significant reductions in carbon emissions. Advanced biofuels were promoted through the Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana, with second-generation ethanol plants at Panipat and Numaligarh becoming operational milestones.

The ministry also worked to strengthen petroleum marketing infrastructure. More than 90,000 retail outlets were equipped with digital payment systems, supported by over 2.71 lakh point-of-sale terminals.

To improve fuel access in remote areas, door-to-door delivery of petrol and diesel was expanded with the deployment of over 3,200 bowsers. Under the Swachh Bharat Mission, toilet facilities were ensured at nearly all fuel stations, with many outlets providing separate amenities for men and women.
