IIM Nagpur, ONGC Green sign MOU: Boost to green energy target of India

In a move of national significance aligned with India’s clean energy goals, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur and ONGC Green Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on December 20 to collaborate on research, capacity building and policy-oriented initiatives in the green and future energy sector.

The MoU was signed by IIM Nagpur Director Prof. Bhimaraya Metri and ONGC Green Limited Chief Operating Officer Harsh Nupur Joshi. Senior faculty members from IIM Nagpur, including Prof. Alok Kumar Singh, Dean – Executive Education Programmes, and Prof. Nikunj Kumar Jain, Chairperson of the Executive MBA in Energy Management, were present at the signing ceremony. ONGC was represented by Deepak Kumar, General Manager (Electrical).

Addressing the gathering, Joshi said the energy sector is witnessing rapid transformation and emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts to support India’s net-zero emissions target by 2070. He said the partnership would focus on projects related to energy storage, biofuels and future energy solutions such as green hydrogen, which he described as a potential game changer for the country.

Prof. Metri noted that India’s progress in green energy is being closely watched globally. He said IIM Nagpur was proud to partner with ONGC Green in a mission of national importance and highlighted that the collaboration would contribute research, leadership development and policy insights to help shape India’s future energy ecosystem.

Under the agreement, the two institutions will jointly work on areas including environmental sustainability and ESG frameworks, integration of renewable energy into power systems, carbon and green credit markets, energy storage, e-mobility policies and leadership development. The partnership aims to combine IIM Nagpur’s academic and policy expertise with ONGC Green’s operational experience in the renewable energy domain.

The collaboration is expected to deliver tangible benefits for citizens by supporting cleaner and more reliable power, promoting affordable and sustainable energy solutions, creating green jobs and contributing to healthier living conditions. By strengthening India’s green energy ecosystem, the partnership aims to play a key role in meeting future energy demands while ensuring inclusive and sustainable growth.

ONGC Green, the renewable energy arm of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, is leading the organisation’s plan to achieve 10 GW of green energy capacity by 2030 through solar, wind, energy storage, biofuels and green hydrogen projects. The partnership with IIM Nagpur is expected to provide strong academic and policy support to these initiatives, while contributing to India’s broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
