HCS sells Hashøj biogas plant to Shell Biogas, ending three decades of operation

HCS A/S has sold its Hashøj Biogas facility in West Zealand to Shell Biogas, formerly known as Nature Energy, bringing an end to more than 30 years of activity at the site, reports Bioenergy Insight.

The plant, regarded as one of Denmark’s oldest and most reliable biogas facilities, will be shut down to make way for the construction of a new biogas project under its new owner.

HCS, among Denmark’s biggest companies in transport, waste and environmental services, employs about 500 people in its local and international operations. The company had taken over the Hashøj site in 2019 and has managed it since then.

“This marks the close of a long chapter for Hashøj Biogas. The facility has played a key role in Denmark’s biogas journey, and while it is always difficult to end operations at such a historic site, the transition opens the door to a new phase of development,” an HCS spokesperson said.

Law firm Plesner advised HCS on the sale, which covered a wide range of issues including project development, expansion planning, merger and acquisition procedures, supplier arrangements, and coordination with public authorities.
