ZEN Energy has finalized one of Australia’s most significant multi-state Electricity Retail Agreements (ERA) with BOC Australia, a leading industrial gas supplier. Under the agreement, over 45% of BOC’s electricity consumption in Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria will be sourced from solar power throughout the term of the contract.
The 10-year agreement, which runs through to 2035, was established through a strategic three-way partnership with ACEN Australia. It includes a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) under which ZEN will acquire approximately 23% of the electricity generated by ACEN’s 400 MW New England (Stage 1) Solar project in NSW.
This transition to solar energy will allow BOC Australia to cut its carbon emissions by more than 40% by 2035. BOC is a subsidiary of Linde, a global leader in industrial gases and engineering, which has committed to reducing its global emissions by 35% within the same timeframe.
“This agreement supports Linde’s global goal to reduce Scope 2 emissions through increased use of renewable energy,” said Theo Martin of BOC Australia. “Beyond lowering our own emissions, it also enables us to help our customers improve efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint by offering competitively priced, lower-emission industrial gases.”
Anthony Garnaut, CEO of ZEN Energy, highlighted the collaboration’s significance: “This is renewable energy transition in action, at scale. Such progress wouldn’t be possible without the strong partnership between BOC, ACEN Australia, and ZEN. BOC is our first global customer, reflecting strong trust in our model and mission. As the first energy retailer in Australia to adopt science-based emissions targets, ZEN is proud to see our values shared and put into action.”
David Pollington, Managing Director of ACEN Australia, added: “This deal marks another key milestone for the New England Solar project, a major contributor to the National Electricity Market (NEM) and the site of New England’s first large-scale battery storage facility. Our offtake agreement with ZEN enables us to expand renewable energy infrastructure and deliver cleaner power to Australian homes and industries, reducing reliance on more carbon-intensive energy sources.”
