YTL PowerSeraya, a Singaporean utility, has commenced construction on a 600MW hydrogen-ready combined-cycle gas turbine unit at its Pulau Seraya Power Station, with an anticipated completion date of late 2027.
Earlier this year, YTL won a request for proposals from Singapore’s Energy Market Authority to enhance gas-fired power generation capacity that can also operate using hydrogen. This initiative aims to address the expected increase in electricity demand by 2028 while transitioning to lower-carbon energy sources.
The turbine, which is being supplied by GE Vernova, will initially be capable of running on a blend of up to 50% hydrogen. There are plans to retrofit it in the future to accommodate 100% hydrogen operation.
