The World Biogas Association (WBA) has signed a strategic agreement with the State Government of São Paulo that could transform the region into a major centre for sustainable biomethane production. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on June 5 to mark World Environment Day, is seen as a key step in advancing clean energy goals in Brazil, reports Bunkerspot.
The agreement aligns with the WBA’s global initiative, #MakingBiogasHappen, which seeks to fully leverage anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas technologies for climate action and energy resilience. As part of this collaboration, São Paulo is expected to implement two core programmes: the Global Biogas Regulatory Framework and the Anaerobic Digestion Certification Scheme International (ADCS International).
“This agreement marks a major milestone for the development of biogas in Brazil,” said Dr. Pradeep Monga, WBA’s Senior Advisor and Policy Director. “São Paulo has the infrastructure, technical know-how, and political commitment to lead Brazil’s shift toward a low-carbon, circular economy powered by biogas.”
Natália Resende, São Paulo’s Secretary for Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics, said the partnership aims to draw international investment, improve training in the biogas sector, and promote better regulatory practices.
With an estimated 25 billion Nm³ of biomethane potential annually—the highest in Brazil—and an established gas pipeline network, São Paulo is considered ideally positioned to serve as a national and international hub for sustainable biomethane production, the WBA noted.
