The World Biogas Association (WBA) is preparing for the ‘World Biogas Association INDIA Congress 2024’, set for October 23 and 24 at Le Méridien, New Delhi. Building on the success of its inaugural event in 2023, the Congress aims to advance the biogas sector in India by emphasizing decarbonization, energy security, and climate action. The WBA’s mission is to promote global biogas development, targeting a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 11 percent and the creation of up to 15 million new jobs worldwide.
As India strengthens its role in the global energy transition, the 2024 Congress will be crucial to its goal of establishing 5,000 large-scale compressed biogas (CBG) plants by 2030. The International Energy Agency (IEA)’s ‘Renewables 24’ report projects an 88 percent growth in India’s CBG market by 2030, with the potential for growth up to 150 percent if enhanced policy support is provided.
This year’s Congress will gather government officials, industry leaders, and international experts to discuss policies, technological advancements, and investment opportunities to drive the sector forward. Key topics will include strategies for reducing air and water pollution, meeting India’s climate commitments, and enhancing energy security by decreasing dependence on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG). The discussions will focus on how biogas can help address India’s increasing energy demands while tackling environmental issues.
Notable speakers at the Congress will include Tarun Kapoor, Advisor to the Prime Minister’s Office; Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa and former CEO of NITI Aayog; Pankaj Jain, IAS, Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas; and P.K. Singh, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Their participation highlights the government’s dedication to biogas as a vital part of its sustainable development strategy.
Recently, the WBA has concentrated on its flagship #MakingBiogasHappen Programme, which includes initiatives like the ‘Global Biogas Regulatory Framework’ and the ‘International Anaerobic Digestion Certification Scheme (ADCS)’. These efforts aim to standardize regulations and certification practices globally, facilitating substantial growth in the biogas sector.
