A pioneering waste management initiative aims to convert all of Jamshedpur’s food waste into biogas within two years.
Ritu Raj Sinha, Managing Director of Tata Steel UISL, announced the company’s ambitious goal during a media briefing.
The project seeks to process the city’s entire food waste—making up 40% of the daily 260-tonne waste generation—into biogas by March 2026.
Sinha highlighted the environmental and economic benefits of this initiative, stating, “If our plans succeed, Jamshedpur will lead the way in fully converting food waste into biogas, setting a new benchmark for urban waste management.”
Twenty establishments in and around Jamshedpur have already installed biogas waste management systems, including five prominent hotels and restaurants, demonstrating the growing adoption of this technology.
On Tuesday, biogas systems were launched at three notable locations:
1. Akino Luxury Hotel
2. Dasaprakash (a well-known South Indian restaurant)
3. Kerala Samajam Model School (KSMS)
KSMS has become the first educational institution in Jamshedpur to implement a biogas system on its premises.
