Waga Energy, Valorizon and Avergies to collaborate to produce RNG in Southwestern France

Valorizon and Avergies have partnered with Waga Energy to develop a biogas recovery unit at the Albié non-hazardous landfill in Monflanquin, located in Southwestern France. The new facility, known as a WAGABOX® unit, will convert biogas from the landfill into Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) for local use.

Scheduled to be operational by the end of 2025, the WAGABOX® unit is expected to produce about 12 GWh of RNG annually — enough to meet the energy needs of 3,000 households. The project will help prevent the release of 2,400 tonnes of CO2 each year by replacing fossil natural gas with biomethane.

The gas produced at the site will be injected directly into GRDF’s distribution network, where it will be used to power homes and businesses. The Monflanquin landfill, which processes nearly 30,000 tonnes of waste every year, has engaged local and regional stakeholders to maximize the capture of biogas, further reducing its environmental impact.

In the past, the biogas on the site was flared. Since its involvement, Waga Energy could transform it into biomethane. This clean source of renewable energy will give alternative power to the region away from carbon-based fossil fuels.

According to the statement by the chairman and CEO of SEM Avergies, Pascal de Sermet, “The partnership with Waga Energy is indeed a real step forward for our project and for the region, thanks to the innovative character it gave to an alluring concept that fits well in such an ambitious scheme”.

The project has two sides in that it affords the company both an economic benefit and a potential environmental impact. De Sermet declared: “The project presents not only a profitable economic interest but also contributes to local energy transition. Again, we are pleased to be able to undertake an environmentally responsible way to provide locally generated green gas to the profit of inhabitants and entrepreneurs in Lot-et-Garonne”.
