In May, the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service reported that the United States exported 71,012 metric tons of biodiesel and biodiesel blends of B30 and higher. This marked an increase from the 60,273.9 metric tons exported the previous month, but a decrease from the 106,825.3 metric tons exported in May 2023, reported Biodiesel Magazine.
The primary destinations for U.S. biodiesel exports in May were Canada with 66,259.2 metric tons, Peru with 4,691.1 metric tons, and Indonesia with 61.6 metric tons. The total value of these exports was $97.16 million for May, down from $84.58 million in April and significantly lower than $197.5 million in May of the previous year.
For the first five months of 2024, U.S. biodiesel exports totaled 224,435.7 metric tons valued at $314.45 million. In comparison, during the same period in 2023, exports reached 348,738.6 metric tons valued at $604.67 million.
In May, the U.S. imported 127,104.7 metric tons of biodiesel and biodiesel blends of B30 and higher, a decrease from 207,932.6 metric tons in April but an increase from 119,073.4 metric tons in May of the previous year.
Canada was the leading source of U.S. biodiesel imports in May with 30,761.2 metric tons, followed by Spain with 28,110.6 metric tons and Germany with 27,558.6 metric tons. The total value of U.S. biodiesel imports for May was $165.18 million, down from $289.11 million in April and slightly lower than $196.7 million in May of the previous year.
For the first five months of 2024, total U.S. biodiesel imports amounted to 799,380.1 metric tons valued at $1.11 billion, compared to 656,153.8 metric tons imported during the same period in 2023 valued at $1.17 billion.
