UN Chief urges clean energy push, responsible AI at New Delhi summit

United Nations General Secretary Antonio Guterres met leaders from India’s renewable energy sector in New Delhi during his visit for the Global AI Impact Summit 2026, stressing the need for faster action to move away from fossil fuels, ANI reported.

In a post on X, the UN chief said he had listened to perspectives from industry, finance, policy and civil society representatives. He noted that while a clean energy future is within reach, it would require a system-wide transformation to speed up the transition from fossil fuels.

During his visit, Guterres also held bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and met President Droupadi Murmu.

Addressing the Global AI Impact Summit 2026 in the national capital, Guterres called for the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence for the benefit of humanity. He urged countries to work together to prepare, protect and invest in people at a time when global trust is under strain and technological competition is intensifying.

Speaking on the role of science in international AI governance, he said rapid AI innovation is moving faster than the world’s ability to fully understand it. He cautioned that policies must be based on reliable facts rather than speculation or misinformation and called for greater knowledge-sharing across countries and sectors.

Guterres highlighted steps taken by the United Nations, including the formation of an Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence. He said the panel aims to bridge knowledge gaps and assess the real impact of AI across economies and societies so that countries at all levels of technological development can act with clarity.

He added that the 40 experts proposed for the panel have been confirmed by the UN General Assembly and that the group will work quickly to deliver its first report ahead of a global dialogue on AI governance scheduled for July. The panel, he said, will provide a shared foundation for member states to move towards technical coordination and evidence-based decisions.

Describing science-led governance as essential, Guterres said it can help make progress in AI safer, fairer and more widely shared.

The India AI Impact Summit brought together policymakers, industry leaders, academics, technology innovators and civil society representatives from across the world in New Delhi to advance global discussions on artificial intelligence.
