UK fuel distributor Certas Energy has announced a significant expansion of its hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) distribution network, supported by a fresh seven-figure investment aimed at boosting access to renewable fuels across the country.
Over the past two months, the company has added six new HVO supply and storage depots, bringing its nationwide total to 28. The rollout is set to continue in the coming weeks and months, with further expansion planned. New locations already added to the network include Whitby, Fort William, Porthmadog, Braintree, and Sheffield. Later this year, the Isle of Wight will also see renewable diesel stocked locally for the first time.
The investment not only expands availability for customers but also enables Certas Energy to increase the use of HVO in its own vehicle fleet, with an additional one million litres expected to be used internally as part of the company’s broader decarbonisation strategy. In total, the expansion will add around one million litres of HVO to its supply network, helping to meet growing demand from UK businesses seeking more sustainable fuel options.
According to recent data from Quantum’s biofuels report, around 700 million litres of HVO were consumed in the UK in 2024, with usage continuing to rise each year. Certas Energy has reported a 60% year-on-year increase in its own HVO sales.
HVO is a renewable diesel alternative that can replace standard diesel without requiring vehicle modifications. It offers up to a 90% reduction in carbon emissions for vehicles and machinery, making it an attractive solution for companies looking to lower their environmental impact.
Richard Billington, Managing Director (Energy Solutions) at Certas Energy, commented:
“I’m pleased to reaffirm Certas Energy’s long-term commitment to supporting UK businesses. With today’s announcement, we want to assure fleet managers and business operators that the transition to high-quality renewable diesel is now easier than ever. Expanding reliable access remains a key focus of our strategy, and we’re excited to deliver even more HVO to help decarbonise communities across the country.”
