Terviva, a company that helps farmers grow a special type of tree called Pongamia, has partnered with Idemitsu, an energy company. Together, they are starting a project in Queensland, Australia, to plant these trees. Idemitsu is also working with Stanmore, another Australian company, on this project.
The goal is to use pongamia trees to create a more environmentally friendly type of fuel for aeroplanes called Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Terviva has developed a special way to grow these trees that helps farmers produce a lot of them while also being good for the environment. Idemitsu has the knowledge and experience to turn the oil from these trees into SAF.
This project will not only produce fuel for aeroplanes but will also explore other ways to use the Pongamia tree. For example, they will look at how to reduce carbon emissions by planting more trees, which helps clean the air; create energy by using parts of the tree to make fuel for power plants; and feed animals by using other parts of the tree as food for livestock.
Naveen Sikka, the CEO at Terviva, stated, “We are excited to collaborate with Idemitsu. They share our vision of a sustainable future. The methods to grow pongamia trees that we have created are proven and will help us build a better future for both people and the planet.”
