Telangana considers e-scooter scheme for female college students

The Telangana government is considering a proposal to provide electric scooters to female college students to improve mobility and safety while travelling to educational institutions. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced that the plan is under review during an event in Hyderabad held to mark International Women’s Day on March 8, KollegeApply reported.

Reddy said the state administration is studying the feasibility of offering electric scooters to young women pursuing higher education across Telangana. The proposed initiative aims to make commuting easier for students who travel long distances to colleges.

According to the government, better transport facilities could help students move more conveniently between their homes and educational institutions while also reducing their dependence on crowded public transport.

The announcement was made during a programme that honoured women journalists on International Women’s Day. During the event, the chief minister highlighted the importance of supporting women’s education and increasing their participation in professional fields.

Officials said the scheme is still under consideration and will require detailed planning before it is implemented. The government will need to decide on budget allocations, eligibility criteria for beneficiaries and the distribution process for the vehicles.

The proposal was also part of commitments made during the 2023 state assembly elections, and the government is now evaluating ways to implement it effectively.

Authorities added that the initiative is linked to Telangana’s broader efforts to promote electric mobility and reduce pollution. The state government has been working on several measures to encourage the use of electric vehicles, including plans to expand electric public transport and promote cleaner transport options in cities.
