Nordic biogas developer St1 Biokraft has inaugurated its flagship liquefied biogas (LBG) facility in Mönsterås, Kalmar County, marking a major step in the company’s growth plans, reports Bioenergy Insight.
The plant, the company’s 13th, has an annual production capacity of about 138 GWh of LBG, making it one of the largest biogas facilities in Sweden. This is equivalent to roughly 13 million litres of diesel per year. The facility processes around 260,000 tonnes of manure annually, sourced from one of the country’s most livestock-intensive regions.
Construction of the plant began in February 2023 and was completed in spring 2025. Deliveries started in August, and full-scale production is expected by the end of the year.
Miika Johansson, CEO of St1 Biokraft, said the project reflects both ambition and innovation. “The Mönsterås plant is a major milestone in our ambition to produce 3 TWh of biogas by 2030 and strengthen our position as the leading biogas player in the Nordics. The facility demonstrates the potential of circular economy principles, producing renewable energy from local raw materials while supplying high-quality biofertiliser back to agriculture,” he said.
The company claims liquefied biogas can reduce carbon emissions by up to 200% compared with fossil fuels. In addition, the plant’s biofertiliser products help cut the use of synthetic fertilisers and improve soil health.
The Mönsterås project is part of St1 Biokraft’s Nordic expansion strategy, which includes investments of around 900 million SEK. Funding support also came from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s Klimatklivet programme.
In a move aimed at building stronger ties with the local community, farmers in the region co-own the facility through Mönsterås Biogas AB.
