Toysal, a leading company in industrial waste collection, management, and transport in Galicia since 1982, has teamed up with CycleØ, a European frontrunner in the development, investment, and operation of biomethane plants, to announce the successful completion of an innovative organic waste project. The collaboration focuses on the collection, management, and transportation of organic waste to produce biomethane. Leveraging Toysal’s infrastructure and expertise, the project will manage up to 22,000 tonnes of organic waste annually. Using CycleØ’s technology, the resulting biogas will be purified to generate 45 GWh of biomethane per year, preventing the emission of approximately 6,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.
The project, named Ecogalia, is located in Porriño, Pontevedra (Galicia), and is a joint venture between the two companies. It aims to achieve a biogas production of 6.6 million nominal cubic metres per year (45 GWh) once fully operational. By utilizing local waste, the plant will boost activity at the Porriño site, create new jobs, and optimize waste treatment processes, contributing to the circular economy.
The biomethane produced will be injected directly into the gas distribution network, supporting the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors and helping Spain meet its target of producing 20 TWh of biomethane per year by 2030.
This marks CycleØ’s second milestone in biomethane production from industrial waste, following its recent acquisition of the GARYC waste management plant in Toledo. CycleØ currently operates three biomethane plants in Spain, has built and runs the first private gas injection point in Spain, and aims to develop, invest in, and operate up to 30 biogas plants across the Iberian Peninsula.
Laurence Molke, CEO of CycleØ, said, “This new plant is the product of a close partnership between two companies that share the same goal: to turn waste into value, promote sustainability, and advance decarbonization. CycleØ is one of the few developers, investors, builders, and operators of biomethane plants in Spain and Europe, making it the ideal long-term partner for Spain’s push to scale biomethane production.”
Victor Toca Achurra, President of Toysal, stated, “We launched this project to enhance the sustainability of our operations and to align with our mission of environmental responsibility and societal progress. Partnering with CycleØ, with its deep expertise in biomethane, ensures the project’s success. Moreover, CycleØ’s shared values of innovation and sustainability complement our own, making it an ideal partner for this initiative.”
