Singapore Airlines has agreed to purchase one thousand tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel from renewable fuel producer Neste, as announced by the national carrier on Monday (May 6).
This agreement marks a significant step for SIA and its budget airline Scoot, making them the first carriers to receive sustainable aviation fuel from Neste’s Singapore refinery. Additionally, this transaction represents Neste’s inaugural direct supply of the fuel to airlines at Changi Airport.
Neste will blend the sustainable aviation fuel, known as neat Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel, with conventional jet fuel in accordance with safety regulations. The blended jet fuel will be delivered to Changi Airport’s fuel hydrant system in two installments: the first in the second quarter of this year and the second in Q4.
The sustainable aviation fuel is entirely derived from renewable waste and residue raw materials, resulting in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 percent over its life cycle, according to Neste.
This agreement is a significant milestone in SIA’s efforts to incorporate at least 5 percent sustainable aviation fuel into its total fuel uplift by 2030, stated Lee Wen Fen, the group’s chief sustainability officer.
Starting from May, SIA will also offer 1,000 sustainable aviation fuel Book and Claim Units (BCUs) to its corporate travelers, shippers, and freight forwarders. Each BCU represents one tonne of neat sustainable aviation fuel along with its associated carbon dioxide reduction benefit.
