Rybnik’s green energy center secures PLN 74 million funding for biogas project

The Green Energy Center (CZE), the municipal utility of Rybnik in southern Poland, has received financial support from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management for a major biogas project worth PLN 97 million (USD 26 million / EUR 23 million), reports Renewables Now.

The financing package amounts to PLN 74 million, consisting of a PLN 35 million grant and a low-interest loan of more than PLN 38 million, provided under the Modernisation Fund as part of a national programme to promote cogeneration based on municipal biogas, the fund announced.

The upcoming biogas plant in Rybnik will process around 20,000 tonnes of biodegradable waste each year, including food scraps and green waste. Through anaerobic digestion, the waste will be converted into biogas, which will then be used to generate both electricity and heat.

According to the fund, the heat produced will meet the operational needs of the facility, while surplus electricity will be supplied to the national grid.

Officials said the project will help improve waste management, boost renewable energy production, and enhance energy security for Rybnik and the surrounding areas.
