Japanese renewable energy developer Renova Inc. has announced that its Omaezakikou Biomass Power Plant will restart operations in October after being offline for several months due to equipment issues, reports Bioenergy Insight.
The 75-megawatt plant, located at the Port of Omaezaki in Shizuoka Prefecture near Suruga Bay, uses a fuel mix of wood pellets and palm kernel shells.
Operations were suspended on June 29 when a leak was found in the auxiliary boiler system. Investigations later confirmed the cause was a mechanical fault.
The facility had faced setbacks even before this stoppage. Originally scheduled to begin operations in December 2023, its launch was delayed until January 29, 2025. Despite the challenges, the project remains one of Renova’s main biomass ventures and a key part of its plan to boost renewable energy generation in Japan.
In July, Renova said the shutdown was a precaution to allow for detailed inspections and necessary repairs. With the problem resolved, the company now expects the plant to resume supplying electricity next month.
