Renewable energy surpasses coal for first time in 6 months: International Solar Alliance DG Ashish Khanna

For the first time, renewable energy generation surpassed coal in the first six months of this calendar year, according to Ashish Khanna, Director General of the International Solar Alliance (ISA).

Speaking at the 8th ISA Assembly held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Tuesday, Khanna highlighted the accelerating growth of solar power worldwide. “It took 25 years for the world to reach 1,000 gigawatts of solar capacity, but in just two years, another 1,000 gigawatts have been added,” he said, projecting that the capacity could double again within the next four years to reach 4,600 gigawatts globally.

Khanna noted that about 71 percent of new solar installations are occurring in the Asia-Pacific region, with Latin America emerging as the next major growth hub. He also pointed to Africa’s vast untapped potential, describing it as “the continent with the best solar radiation yet to be fully harnessed.”

The ISA chief said the alliance is encouraging greater private-sector participation through initiatives like the Global Solar Facility, which will launch operations in Africa before expanding to the Asia-Pacific. He emphasized ISA’s efforts in capacity building to help countries develop localized solutions and reduce investment risks. “We are creating a new technology roadmap and policy framework to guide member nations on effectively using solar and emerging technologies,” Khanna added.

Announcing a major initiative, Khanna said the Africa Solar Facility will be launched next year. He also revealed a new program on regional interconnection aimed at reducing reliance on battery storage.

Khanna outlined other key ISA focus areas, including waste management and recycling as part of a broader critical minerals strategy. “We will work on harmonizing standards using India’s experience and the IEC framework, ensuring consistency across all 125 member countries,” he said.

He further announced plans to establish an ISA Academy and Global Capability Centre to provide digital learning tools to all 125 member nations. “No matter where you are or your income level, you will have access to comprehensive information on how solar energy can benefit your country,” Khanna stated.

Additionally, the ISA will release several flagship reports in the coming months, covering global solar trends, the solar compass, ease of doing solar, and floating solar technologies.
