New Delhi: The Renewable Energy India Expo (REI) 2026 is expected to generate an investment pipeline of more than Rs 2,800 crore for India’s bioenergy sector, with biogas and compressed biogas (CBG) emerging as key focus areas, according to the Indian Biogas Association (IBA), PTI reported.
The three-day expo will be held from October 22 to 24 at India Expo Mart & Centre in Greater Noida. The Rs 2,800 crore investment pipeline represents nearly 12% of the Rs 23,731 crore outlay approved for the GOBARdhan (Galvanising Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan) National Circular Bioenergy Scheme.
The Union Cabinet approved the GOBARdhan scheme in August 2026, with implementation beginning on September 1. The scheme is aimed at expanding domestic CBG production, attracting private investment and developing a circular bioeconomy.
IBA said REI 2026 could help connect investors, project developers, technology providers and policymakers and convert the policy push into commercially scalable bioenergy projects.
The Bio-Energy Pavilion at this year’s expo will be the largest so far, with 35% more exhibitors than in 2025. It will feature global technology companies, startups and policymakers and showcase technologies covering waste-to-energy, CBG, co-digestion and digital monitoring.
The pavilion is being supported by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG).
“India is no longer looking at biogas as just a rural solution. It is now a cornerstone of the clean energy economy, reducing carbon emissions, supporting farmers, fuelling transport, and enabling green hydrogen,” IBA President A R Shukla said.
He said the GOBARdhan scheme’s pricing and offtake support could help the sector move from pilot projects towards larger-scale deployment.
The scheme, which will run until 2035-36, targets nearly ten-fold growth in domestic CBG production. Its key provisions include an administered CBG price of Rs 2,110 per MMBtu, assured offtake mandates for the CNG and PNG segments, capital assistance of up to Rs 2 crore per tonne per day for greenfield CBG plants, and support for pipeline infrastructure and credit guarantees.
IBA said the three-day REI Expo is expected to attract more than 70,000 participants from across the world, with participation spanning bioenergy, solar, wind, hydrogen, electric mobility and energy storage.
IBA Chairman Gaurav Kedia said India had the potential to produce more than 62 million tonnes of CBG annually. He said expanded CBG production could help reduce fuel imports, generate employment and support the development of a circular economy.
According to Kedia, pricing support, capital assistance and offtake mandates under the GOBARdhan scheme have addressed some of the major constraints faced by the CBG sector.
