Qarlbo Biodiversity and Woodland Biofuels sign deal to supply 500,000 tonnes of sustainable biomass

Qarlbo Biodiversity and Canada-based Woodland Biofuels signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to supply up to 500,000 tonnes of sustainably harvested pine forest thinnings from its forestry operations in the United States, reports Bioenergy Insight.

The agreement reflects both companies’ commitment to promoting renewable energy and ecological restoration through responsible biomass production, they said in a joint statement.

The deal marks a significant step forward for Qarlbo’s Nature+® Forest Management Strategy, which focuses on conserving native species, restoring natural habitats, and practicing environmentally responsible forestry. The strategy is designed to provide biomass for energy industries while also helping capture carbon and generate biodiversity credits.

“This agreement shows that responsible forestry can support both nature and business,” said Aleksandra Holmlund, CEO of Qarlbo Biodiversity. “The pine thinnings we supply will come from forests managed in ways that protect local ecosystems and biodiversity.”

The biomass will be sourced from Qarlbo’s land in the U.S., including a 10,580-acre project in southern Louisiana. All material will be certified for sustainability and linked to biodiversity-positive outcomes, the companies confirmed.

Greg Nuttall, CEO of Woodland Biofuels, said the deal reflects his company’s focus on clean energy that supports environmental goals. “This partnership helps us stay true to our mission — producing clean fuel while protecting the health of forest ecosystems,” he said.

While financial terms were not disclosed, the agreement could see Woodland Biofuels receive up to 500,000 tonnes of biomass over the life of the partnership.
