Power2X and Advario to develop green hydrogen-based sustainable aviation fuel production facility in Netherlands

Power2X and Advario are set to establish a green hydrogen-based sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facility in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

This facility is anticipated to have an annual production capacity exceeding 250,000 tonnes of e-SAF, marking it as the largest such facility announced to date.

The plant will import green methanol produced from green hydrogen and biogenic carbon to use as feedstock while also producing green hydrogen locally. Advario plans to create a storage and logistics facility, supported by marine and rail infrastructures, to ensure a reliable supply chain for these green molecules.

Strategically located for direct access to European airports, including Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, the hub is expected to facilitate around 7,000 flights annually between Amsterdam and New York, according to H2 View.

With waterfront access and proximity to a key hydrogen pipeline, the site is poised to become a central location for sustainable energy development in one of Europe’s major energy and chemical hubs.

“This site and its innovative business model aim to enable competitive SAF production on a global scale in the heart of Europe,” said Occo Roelofsen, Founder and CEO of Power2X. “It highlights our commitment to leading decarbonization efforts and delivering sustainable solutions for the future.”

Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, noted, “Currently, SAF production facilities in Rotterdam account for 24% of Europe’s aviation fuel needs. The EU targets that 20% of all aviation fuel should come from renewable sources.

“The production of e-SAF in Rotterdam is crucial for meeting future demand. This initiative by Advario and Power2X exemplifies the successful transformation of land in the Port of Rotterdam from fossil fuels to green, sustainable production.”

However, SAF production projects are encountering increasing challenges within the hydrogen industry. For instance, on October 10, Uniper and Sasol canceled their 200MW SAF project in Sweden, highlighting the difficulties in advancing large-scale initiatives.
