Port of Alicante seeks proposals for green hydrogen plant

The Port of Alicante has begun a Preliminary Market Consultation (PMC) to receive proposals for setting up a green hydrogen plant under its PORTALI-H2 project. The move is aimed at reducing carbon emissions at the port and positioning it as a key player in Europe’s energy transition, reports Inspenet.

The consultation will remain open until September 30, 2025. During this time, private companies can submit plans to design, build, and operate the facility through a concession model.

The Port Authority has chosen a public-private partnership, with private firms expected to handle funding, technology, and operations. Officials said this approach is intended to draw investment, bring in new ideas, and ensure the project fits the port’s logistics needs.

The proposed plant will have at least 1 MW of capacity, with 70% of its energy supply coming from renewable sources. The hydrogen produced will be used for port activities as well as land and sea transport, helping reduce reliance on coal and other fossil fuels.

The project will also involve collaboration with research institutions and universities, turning the port into a testing ground for clean energy technologies.

Authorities said the effort supports the European Green Deal and the EU’s “Fit for 55” plan, which aims for climate neutrality by 2050.

This initiative builds on other steps already taken by the port, including process digitalization, electric mobility, solar power, mini-wind systems, and blue economy projects.

Officials said the consultation will help define the project’s technical and financial scope and may lead to solutions that can be replicated in other Mediterranean ports. They added that the roadmap has already been set, and the priority now is to find the right partners to make Alicante a resilient and competitive hub for the future.
