Poland allocates over PLN 101 million for Eko Dolina’s municipal biogas plant

Poland’s National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOSiGW) will provide more than PLN 101 million (USD 28 million/EUR 24 million) to support the Eko Dolina project, which aims to build a municipal biogas facility, reports Renewables Now.

According to the fund, the total cost of constructing a methane fermentation plant at the waste-management company’s site in Lezyce, located in the northern Pomeranian province, will exceed PLN 140 million.

The project will receive over PLN 45 million in grants and more than PLN 55 million in loans from the Modernisation Fund under a priority programme supporting the development of cogeneration systems based on municipal biogas.

The biogas plant, planned under a “design and build” model, is expected to process 30,000 tonnes of bio-waste annually from municipalities in the region. The biogas generated will be used for producing both electricity and heat. Surplus electricity will be supplied to the grid, while the heat will support the facility’s wastewater operations.

Damian Kleina, CEO of Eko Dolina, said that the agreement with the environmental fund would allow the company to modernise its infrastructure and improve waste-processing capacity and energy generation in line with circular-economy principles.

The Modernisation Fund, financed through the sale of 4.5% of the EU’s CO₂ emission allowances managed by the European Investment Bank, is expected to provide Poland with around PLN 60 billion between 2021 and 2030.
