The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has crossed 50 lakh rooftop solar installations, with more than 50.06 lakh households benefiting under the scheme as of July 2026, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) said.
Launched with an outlay of ₹75,021 crore, the scheme has achieved the milestone in just over two years, compared with 7.94 lakh rooftop solar installations recorded during the previous decade. The ministry said the programme is now adding around one lakh beneficiary households every six days, with the pace of installations increasing 3.2 times over the past nine months, ANI reported.
July 2026 recorded the highest monthly deployment since the scheme’s launch, with 5.06 lakh households installing rooftop solar systems. Daily installations increased from 5,038 in October 2025 to nearly 16,328 in July 2026.
The government said ₹28,024 crore has been transferred directly to beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism as rooftop solar subsidies.
According to the ministry, nearly 19 lakh households are now receiving zero electricity bills, while more than 12 lakh households earned a combined ₹421 crore by selling surplus electricity to the grid during the 2024-25 financial year. The additional income averaged around ₹3,500 per household annually.
The scheme has also expanded access to rooftop solar for economically weaker sections. Under the Utility-Led Aggregation model, around 1.6 lakh installations have been completed for beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), Below Poverty Line (BPL) and SC/ST categories across four states.
The government said concessional loans at an interest rate of 5.75 per cent have been sanctioned for 21.87 lakh applicants, while total commissioned rooftop solar capacity under the programme has reached 14.8 GW.
The scheme has helped build a domestic rooftop solar ecosystem with 34,219 registered vendors, including 29,469 active vendors, and more than 2.32 lakh people trained through capacity-building programmes.
The ministry said the programme operates through a fully digital platform covering applications, loan processing, net metering and subsidy disbursal. It has also introduced deemed approvals and waived technical feasibility requirements for rooftop solar systems up to 10 kW. In addition, 32 states and Union Territories have eliminated application and net-metering charges.
The government said the scheme has also been extended to public infrastructure, with rooftop solar systems installed on 1.06 lakh government buildings as part of efforts to promote decentralised renewable energy and improve household energy security.
