Mexico’s state-owned oil company Pemex is exploring the possibility of investing in a biorefinery that would produce biogas and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), Environment Minister Alicia Bárcena Ibarra said on Wednesday, reports bnamericas.
Pemex would partner with a Spanish company for the project, which is planned as part of a proposed circular economy complex in the central state of Hidalgo.
“It would be a joint investment,” Bárcena said during the launch of a public consultation for the recycling and circular economy center.
She added that state-owned power company CFE has shown interest in taking the biogas generated from the new facility and injecting it into its natural gas pipelines.
Mexico’s upcoming energy law reforms, set to take effect in 2025, will for the first time allow biogas to be blended into natural gas pipelines.
According to the proposal, the biorefinery would produce biofuels by processing organic waste in a biodigester, along with certain types of plastics and construction debris.
