Mangaluru: The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (ONGC) is exploring the possibility of setting up a green hydrogen plant in Mangaluru to meet the energy needs of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL). This was confirmed by Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Suresh Gopi, in response to a question in the Lok Sabha on Thursday. However, he noted that no investment decision has been made yet regarding the green hydrogen plant.
ONGC is working to meet its target of becoming net zero by 2038 and, for this purpose, is engaging in several activities, including green hydrogen projects. Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the production of green hydrogen can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 10 kg per kilogram of hydrogen produced compared with the production of grey hydrogen.
