Oman: Duqm’s Gigawatt-Scale Green Hydrogen project to be first such large-scale ventures of its kind internationally

Planned at Duqm in southeast Oman, a gigawatt-scale green hydrogen and green ammonia project is poised to stand first such large-scale ventures of its kind globally, ushering in a new era of renewable hydrogen-based clean energy production to support the worldwide energy transition.

HYPORT Duqm, a collaboration between Belgium’s DEME Concessions and Oman’s OQ Alternative Energy, was among the first to ink agreements with Omani authorities to establish an export-oriented renewable hydrogen scheme in Duqm. Recognized by DEME Group as a project of global significance, HYPORT Duqm is slated to be among the early adopters worldwide to produce green hydrogen and green ammonia, as highlighted in the 2023 Annual Report of DEME Group.

The project, to be developed within the Special Economic Zone at Duqm covering an area of 150 km², will utilize wind and solar energy to power the production of green hydrogen and green ammonia, with Phase 1 aiming for a combined capacity of around 1.3 GW and Phase 2 potentially exceeding 2.7 GW.

With a 47-year license granted by Hydrom under the Project Development Agreement, HYPORT Duqm is progressing on schedule to become Oman’s first operational large-scale green hydrogen project, aligned with the nation’s ambitious green energy targets outlined in Vision 2040. Moreover, the agreement solidifies HYPORT Duqm’s concept design, which involves transmitting renewable energy from the generation site to its industrial site near the Port of Duqm for electrolysis and ammonia production.

Leveraging DEME’s expertise in renewables, port development, and green hydrogen development capability, HYPORT Duqm is well-positioned to play a pivotal role in connecting global clusters and facilitating the transportation of green molecules between supply and demand hubs. Alongside this endeavor, DEME is engaged in the HYVE initiative and developing a proprietary digital twin model through its HYPORT Energy team to enhance the competitiveness of entire green hydrogen value chains.

HYPORT Duqm is part of Oman’s broader strategy to establish six green hydrogen projects with a collective annual production capacity of approximately 1 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen by 2030.
