NTPC launches Hydrogen-fuel buses which are set to operate at Leh

NTPC Ltd, India’s largest integrated power utility, marked its 50th Raising Day today, celebrating five decades of exceptional growth, innovation, and contributions to the country’s power sector. Shri Gurdeep Singh, the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), hoisted the NTPC flag at the Engineering Office Complex (EOC) in Noida, in the presence of Board Directors and senior officials. Employees from across the country joined the celebrations via video conference.

During the event, the CMD launched NTPC’s hydrogen-fuel buses, which will soon operate in Leh. These hydrogen buses represent a significant step in NTPC’s efforts to promote clean and green technologies.

In addition, Shri Gurdeep Singh announced a landmark achievement in NTPC’s sustainability journey: the successful synthesis of CO2 captured from flue gas, combined with hydrogen produced from a PEM electrolyzer, which was then converted into methanol at NTPC’s Vindhyachal plant. Both the CO2 capture facility and the CO2-to-methanol plant are the world’s first of their kind, marking a groundbreaking advancement in carbon management and sustainable fuel production.

The CMD further highlighted NTPC’s ongoing work in developing Generation-4 ethanol, green urea, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel. He also noted the company’s progress in testing its first indigenous catalyst for methanol synthesis, alongside advancements in hydrogen, carbon capture, and other cutting-edge technologies, reinforcing NTPC’s commitment to an environmentally sustainable future.

As part of the celebrations, NTPC unveiled its new 50th Anniversary logo, symbolizing the company’s legacy and contribution to India’s progress. The logo features an infinity loop with a fluidic design, representing NTPC’s unwavering commitment to growth and excellence, and its role in powering India’s development over the past 50 years.

The event also saw the recognition of outstanding achievements by the children of NTPC employees, along with the launch of several new IT applications. Additionally, a special comic book on NTPC’s Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) was released. GEM, NTPC’s flagship CSR initiative, has positively impacted over 10,000 girls in rural communities.

Reflecting on the company’s journey, Shri Gurdeep Singh paid tribute to the visionary leadership of NTPC’s founders, including Dr. D.V. Kapoor, the founding Chairman, and other pioneers who laid the foundation for the company’s success.

He stated, “NTPC symbolizes 50 years of powering growth. Our resilience has made us a strong-performing company. As we continue to power India’s future, our growing Renewable Energy footprint, including Nuclear, reflects our commitment to creating a sustainable and infinite future.”
