NTPC Green Energy and Suzlon sign deal for India’s largest 1,166 MW wind power project

NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) has joined forces with Suzlon Group for the largest wind energy project in the nation’s history, totaling 1,166 MW.

According to Suzlon Energy Ltd., this project will involve the installation of 370 wind turbine generators (WTGs), each with a rated capacity of 3.15 MW, across three sites in Gujarat. The electricity generated is expected to power around 3 million households. This initiative is the first of its kind for a public sector unit (PSU) and will greatly expand NGEL’s wind energy portfolio.

The wind energy project by NTPC Green Energy represents a major advancement in India’s clean energy efforts. The installation will feature 370 Suzlon S144 WTGs with Hybrid Lattice Tubular (HLT) towers and will be distributed across two projects by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (a subsidiary of NGEL) and one project by IndianOil NTPC Green Energy Pvt. Ltd. in Gujarat.

Upon completion, this initiative will not only establish Gujarat as a leader in renewable energy but also set a new standard for future PSU-led renewable projects.

Girish Tanti, Vice Chairman of Suzlon Group, commented, “We are thrilled to partner with NTPC Green Energy Limited, the renewables arm of India’s largest utility, NTPC Limited. This landmark collaboration reaffirms our commitment to accelerating India’s renewable energy transition. This is our first direct wind energy order from NGEL, marking Suzlon’s return to the PSU customer segment.”

He continued, “This project will be the largest wind energy initiative by a PSU in Gujarat, cementing the state’s leadership in renewable energy. Once completed, it will set a new benchmark for future projects, significantly contributing to India’s energy self-sufficiency, economic growth, and NGEL’s ambitious goal of adding 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032.”

The NTPC-Suzlon partnership is crucial for NGEL’s ambitious target of adding 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032.

JP Chalasani, Chief Executive Officer of Suzlon Group, stated, “Both NGEL and Suzlon are leaders in their respective fields and will play a key role in India’s energy transition. Achieving India’s energy transition goals relies on the involvement of utilities with the scale and expertise of NGEL. This project is not only the largest wind energy order in India but also the first of many transformative projects between our two organizations.”

He added, “We are committed to delivering this project with exceptional quality. The 1,166 MW wind energy order will see the installation of 370 S144 WTGs, each with a 3.15 MW capacity, across three sites in Gujarat. The generated electricity will power approximately 3 million households.”

This will be a pioneering project for any PSU in India and will significantly enhance NGEL’s wind energy portfolio. This strategic partnership, featuring the flagship S144 wind turbine, is set to become a landmark example in the sector, highlighting the success of the ‘Make in India’ initiative by promoting local manufacturing and sustainable energy solutions.
