Spanish energy company Moeve and Amsterdam-based e-SAF developer Zaffra, a joint venture between Sasol and Topsoe, have signed an agreement to work together on decarbonising aviation fuel in Europe, reports Biofuels International.
The partnership brings together Moeve’s experience in supplying jet fuel, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and Zaffra’s technical and development expertise. Together, they will explore the possibility of setting up e-SAF production facilities in southern Spain, where Moeve is already working on a major green hydrogen initiative known as the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley.
Their joint aim is to help meet the EU’s ReFuelEU Aviation targets, which require at least 6% of aviation fuel used at EU airports to be SAF by 2030, including 1.2% from synthetic fuels such as e-SAF.
Carlos Barrasa, Moeve’s Executive Vice President for Commercial and Clean Energies, said the partnership is a major milestone. “Working with Zaffra brings us closer to building Spain’s first e-SAF plants. By combining our renewable energy efforts with their technology, we are supporting both EU climate goals and our mission to offer cleaner flight options.”
Jan Toshka, CEO of Zaffra, said the partnership represents an important opportunity. “We are excited to work with Moeve to create Spain’s first e-SAF plants. With our shared goals and strengths, we are well-positioned to bring e-SAF to the market quickly, responsibly, and at a large scale.”
