On Thursday, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways reaffirmed its commitment to advancing India’s Green Ports Mission, emphasizing the adoption of clean fuels for a sustainable future, in recognition of World Hydrogen Day.
In a message posted on X, the Ministry highlighted its active efforts to promote hydrogen-based technologies to power vessels, ports, and logistics, thus contributing to a more eco-friendly maritime industry.
“On #WorldHydrogenDay, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing India’s Green Ports Mission through the adoption of clean fuels for a sustainable tomorrow. Under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji, MoPSW is actively promoting hydrogen-based technologies to power vessels, ports, and logistics, paving the way for a cleaner and greener maritime sector,” the post stated.
World Hydrogen Day and Fuel Cell Day is a global initiative designed to raise awareness about hydrogen as a clean, sustainable energy source, as well as the versatile potential of fuel cells. The day serves as a platform to highlight hydrogen’s role in tackling climate change, enhancing energy security, and promoting environmental sustainability.
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, recently emphasized that hydrogen is not only the fuel of the future but also a cornerstone for energy security, economic competitiveness, and environmental responsibility. He also pointed out India’s ambitious target to produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030, backed by a strong policy framework and an investment of Rs 19,700 crore under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. “Every electrolyser manufacturer in the world is coming here because they see potential,” he remarked.
Puri cited examples such as Indian Oil’s green hydrogen plant in Panipat and Tokyo Energy’s competitive bids at Vizag, noting that the decreasing costs of hydrogen production in India signal growing investor confidence and advancing technology. He also mentioned the Solar Energy Corporation of India’s green ammonia tenders, emphasizing the export potential of green ammonia due to its logistical advantages over natural gas.
The Union Cabinet had approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission on January 4, 2023, with an allocation of Rs 19,744 crore. The mission’s primary goal is to position India as a global hub for the production, use, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives, targeting an annual production of 5 MMT of green hydrogen by 2030.
