Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday highlighted the critical role of solar energy in enhancing the state’s agricultural, industrial, power generation, and service sectors. He directed officials to ensure the quality and speed of ongoing solar power projects in Maharashtra, emphasizing the need to expedite work in this area.
Fadnavis issued these directives during a meeting of the Maharashtra State Electricity Board’s Board of Directors, which he chaired. The Chief Minister reiterated the state’s commitment to achieving self-sufficiency in energy and urged improvements across all electricity-related companies in Maharashtra. He also suggested exploring public participation in these companies, possibly through listing them on stock exchanges in the future.
In addition to improving the state’s energy infrastructure, Fadnavis called for the strengthening of district and divisional-level grievance redressal mechanisms to address complaints about energy companies within specified timeframes. This move aims to streamline operations and improve customer satisfaction.
The meeting was attended by key officials, including Minister of State for Energy and Vice Chairman of the Board, Meghna Bordikar; Secretary to the Chief Minister Shrikar Pardeshi; Managing Director of Maharashtra State Electricity Board Abha Shukla; and several directors and independent directors, such as Lokesh Chandra, Radhakrishnan B., Anudeep Dighe, Vishwas Pathak, and Neeta Kelkar.
Meanwhile, in a related development, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has sought a response from the Union of India and other relevant stakeholders on a petition regarding the improper disposal and recycling of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels. The petition raised environmental concerns about the growing issue of discarded solar panels and the need for an organised system to handle their safe disposal, especially as solar panel use increases in rural areas.
The issue underscores the importance of sustainable practices as solar energy continues to grow in popularity, highlighting the urgency of implementing effective solutions for the end-of-life management of solar panels.
