SkyNRG announced Thursday that its Project Wigeon, a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facility planned for Wallula, Washington, has received crucial environmental approvals from both the Washington State Department of Ecology and Walla Walla County, reported Elkhorn media group.
The approvals confirm that Project Wigeon complies with state and local environmental regulations, covering land use, water protection, and fuel transportation standards.
Slated for construction within the Wallula Gap Industrial Business Park at the Port of Walla Walla, Project Wigeon is set to become one of North America’s first commercial-scale SAF operations producing jet fuel from renewable natural gas (RNG).
The facility will convert RNG feedstocks—also called biogenic methane—into sustainable aviation fuel. These feedstocks are sourced from landfills, wastewater treatment plants, and livestock manure, and can be delivered to the Wallula site via existing pipelines and infrastructure.
In 2025, the Washington State Department of Commerce awarded the port a $1.5 million grant to support SkyNRG’s facility construction. With environmental approvals in hand, the project will now enter its engineering and detailed design phase, aiming to begin operations in 2030. Construction is expected to generate up to 600 jobs, with roughly 100 positions available once production starts.
