Know why experts are pushing for dented corn ethanol

Highlighting the significance of ethanol derived from dented corn, J P Gupta, Chair of the Environment Committee at PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, emphasized on Friday that it represents a mature technological pathway and economically competitive solution for India’s decarbonization and sustainable development efforts.

Dr. Gupta underscored that dented corn ethanol embodies the principles of “Food, Feed, and Fuel,” noting its unique dual-use capability unmatched by other sources. He highlighted its potential to not only serve as a reliable energy source but also to significantly improve farmers’ financial conditions through increased demand and income.

Addressing the 4th International Climate Summit organized by PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in New Delhi, Dr. Gupta further elaborated on the benefits of corn ethanol. He mentioned its capability to fully replace gasoline in flex-fuel engines, its suitability as aviation turbine fuel, and its potential as a substitute for LPG.

Dr. Gupta also emphasized that dented corn is particularly advantageous for ethanol production due to its high starch content of 70-75%, compared to 20-30% in normal corn, resulting in a higher ethanol yield of 2.8 gallons per bushel versus 1 gallon per bushel from normal corn.

He highlighted that dented corn is globally the most produced crop, further enhancing its feasibility for ethanol production. Additionally, Dr. Gupta noted its potential in the production of special chemicals and thermoplastics, contributing significantly to climate change mitigation with up to an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels.

Dr. Gupta mentioned that PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry has been at the forefront of India’s decarbonization efforts through initiatives like green hydrogen, hosting international climate summits, and publishing knowledge books on green hydrogen.
