KK Wind Solutions, a EUR 1 billion company backed by A.P. Moller Holding, is making a major move into the green hydrogen sector. Known for its expertise in power converter systems for the wind energy industry, the company is now applying that experience to help produce green hydrogen — a clean fuel created from renewable energy that can be used in industries that are hard to electrify, reports FCW.
The company will supply a Power Supply Unit specifically designed for a 100 MW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer currently being developed by German electrolysis specialist Sunfire. The system will help convert renewable electricity into green hydrogen efficiently, reducing operating costs and supporting large-scale clean energy storage and use.
René Balle, Chief Commercial Officer of KK Wind Solutions, said the project reflects the company’s commitment to enabling a more sustainable future. “We have the technology and experience needed to support the growth of the green hydrogen industry,” he said. “This project with Sunfire reinforces our role as a key player in delivering customized solutions for both electrolyzer systems and grid requirements.”
The collaboration builds on past success. In 2023, KK Wind Solutions supplied two Power Supply Units for Sunfire’s 10 MW pilot electrolyzer project. Each included a 5 MW rectifier and a transformer. The insights gained from that project played a key role in scaling up the new 10 MW units for full-scale hydrogen production.
Under the new agreement, KK Wind Solutions will deliver 10 custom Power Supply Units. Each will include a transformer, rectifier, AC connection, and cooling system. The company will also provide full support throughout the project’s lifecycle — from engineering and installation supervision to commissioning and maintenance.
This order is KK Wind Solutions’ largest delivery of Power Supply Units for a green hydrogen project to date, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion beyond wind energy and into the broader renewable energy sector.
