Karnataka continues to be one of India’s leading renewable-energy states, with 25,675.39 MW of installed green power capacity as of 31 October 2025. The figure represents 10.24% of the country’s total renewable-energy capacity of 2,50,643.45 MW, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi informed in Rajya Sabha
Strong Uptake of Rooftop Solar Under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana
The Centre also reported significant nationwide progress under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY)—a demand-driven scheme that enables all grid-connected residential consumers to install rooftop solar (RTS) systems through the National Portal.
As of 26 November 2025:
- 18,72,499 RTS systems have been installed across India,
- 23,47,694 households have benefitted, and
- In Karnataka alone, 14,151 RTS systems have been deployed, benefitting 22,313 households.
In Belagavi district, 25,778 applications have been submitted and 681 households have received installations under the scheme.
Measures to Accelerate Rooftop Solar Installation
To meet the national target of installing one crore rooftop solar systems by 2026–27, the Ministry has rolled out several enabling measures:
- A fully online process for registration, approval, and direct subsidy disbursal through the National Portal.
- Collateral-free loans through nationalized banks at concessional interest rates (repo + 50 bps, currently 6% per annum), with 5,67,939 installations financed via loans so far.
- Simplified regulatory procedures, including removal of technical feasibility requirements and auto-load enhancement up to 10 kW.
- Inclusion of RESCO and Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) models to expand implementation pathways.
- Integration of net metering agreements directly into the application process.
- A streamlined vendor registration system, with 20,423 vendors registered as of 11 November 2025.
- Extensive capacity-building programmes, training 1,49,916 skilled personnel.
- Broad-based awareness campaigns, including print, TV, radio, and regional outreach.
- Regular monitoring and review meetings with States and DISCOMs, including a recent regional review in Guwahati on 31 October.
- A strengthened grievance redressal mechanism, with a multilingual call centre (15555) operational in 12 languages.
Progress on Solar Parks
Under the scheme for Solar Parks and Ultra-Mega Solar Power Projects, the Centre has released ₹351.94 crore as Central Financial Assistance for the 2,000 MW Pavagada Solar Park in Karnataka—one of the world’s largest solar parks. The project has been fully operational since December 2019.
The Ministry highlighted key lessons from Pavagada for future projects, including the importance of early land acquisition and pre-planned transmission infrastructure.
No New Solar or Wind Parks Planned in North Karnataka
